Carbon Monoxide Law

Amanda's Law Protects NY from the Silent Killer

A law requiring carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in New York homes went into effect February 22, 2010 to help protect New York families.  CO alarms must now be installed in all new and existing one and two-family dwellings, multifamily dwellings and rentals having a fuel-burning appliance, system or attached garage. If you haven't installed CO alarms in your home, don’t wait any longer.

Known as the “silent killer,” CO is the leading cause of accidental poisonings in the United States. Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. The only safe way to detect carbon monoxide in your home is with a working CO alarm. All of Kidde's CO alarms are UL-listed and include Nighthawk technology, which has been proven to be the world's most accurate CO sensing technology based on claims by major manufacturers.

Amanda’s Law Summary:

  • CO alarms must be installed in ALL new and existing one and two-family dwellings, multifamily dwellings and rentals having a fuel-burning appliance, system or attached garage.
  • The NFPA recommends CO alarms be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.
  • CO alarms must be listed to comply with UL 2034 or CSA 6.19 and installed in accordance to manufacturers instructions.
