Why doesn’t my alarm sound when I test it?

Oct 7, 2008

The Test button on Kidde® smoke alarm models i12020, i12040, i12060 and i12080 must be held for at least 5 seconds before the unit will begin its test sounding. On all other Kidde smoke alarm models the button should be pressed and released. Firex smoke alarms require the test button to be pressed and held for a minimum of 3 seconds.

For DC operated alarms, make sure that any pull-tabs have been pulled so the battery has been activated.  Try replacing the battery with a fresh new one.

For AC powered alarms make sure the electrical connector in the back of the unit is securely attached and power indicators are lit.

If your alarm still does not sound you should replace it.  Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. If the unit is approaching the end of its service life, replace it. Most of our smoke alarms have a 5-year warranty. A date code is stamped on the label attached to the back of the unit. If the unit is within warranty you can send it to the following address for replacement:

Kidde Residential and Commercial Division
1016 Corporate Park Drive
Mebane, NC 27302

Please send postage prepaid, and include your shipping address with a brief description of the problem.
